MENAO (Mathematics in Emerging Nations: Achievements and Opportunities) Symposium |
Venue: COEX Convention & Exhibition Center, Seoul, Korea
Date: Tuesday, August 12, 2014 |
|
The MENAO symposium will feature personal stories of mathematicians as well as country specific development stories, both from the perspective of mathematicians in those countries and from the perspective of their international partners. International leading economists will explore the relationship between mathematical development and economic development.
The Republic of Korea (South Korea), the host country of the ICM and MENAO, has experienced a remarkable advancement in mathematics over the last 50 years, which coincided with its rapid economic development. The link between these two fields will be one of the issues explored in the symposium.
Over 400 attendees are invited to discuss the progress made in developing nations in mathematics, mathematics education and its implications to their societies. The goals of the MENAO event are |
|
To listen to the voices of mathematicians and aspiring advanced students of mathematics from the developing world, |
|
To share success stories of development via partnerships between the local mathematical communities, their governments, and international agencies and foundations, |
|
To review the current status of those efforts and future needs, and |
|
To bring together promising individuals and institutions in the developing world with inter- national partners interested in supporting their efforts. |

Background of MENAO – IMU’s involvement in developing countries: |
During the last decades, the International Mathematical Union has substantially increased its attention to mathematics and advanced mathematical education in the developing world, potentially home to the greatest untapped resource of mathematical talent. As part of that work, IMU continues to explore the link between the cultivation of mathematical talent and the economic development of the countries that are home to that talent.
The International Mathematical Union wishes to make MENAO a premier event, of compelling interest to all organizations, governmental agencies, and individuals that have contributed to international mathematical development or are potentially interested in doing so. The symposium will bring promising individuals, initiatives and institutions in mathematics in the developing world together with potential partners with the resources, both human and economic, to help them realize that promise.
